Rubbish Removal vs Skip Hire

Skip hire and man-and-van rubbish removal solve the same problem in very different ways. A skip is a container you rent for a fixed period and fill with your own labour. A man and van is a two-person crew who arrive, carry everything out and drive it away in one visit. The right answer depends mostly on how much waste you have, how heavy it is, and whether you have somewhere off-road to put a skip.

The cost difference: you pay for space, not for a container

This is the part most people get wrong. Skip hire is priced per skip. Order a four-yard skip and you pay for four yards even if you only half fill it. Man and van removal is priced by the volume you actually use, so a modest load costs modest money.

Our load bands start at:

• £79 — up to 1 cubic yard, a handful of bags or one small item.
• £140 — up to 2 cubic yards, roughly a sofa or a small garden clear-up.
• £210 — up to 4 cubic yards, a room's worth of furniture and household waste.
• £270 — up to 6 cubic yards, a larger single-room or garage clearance.

Those prices include the labour, the transport and responsible disposal at a permitted transfer station. Atlas Waste Co. is not VAT registered, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay. A skip quote, by contrast, is usually only the start: add the council permit if it cannot go on your own driveway, add your own weekend spent loading it, and add the cost of hiring help for anything heavy.

Skip permits in Greater Manchester

If a skip is placed anywhere on the public highway — the road, the verge or the pavement — the skip company must hold a permit from the local council for that location, and the cost is passed to you. Every borough across Greater Manchester runs its own scheme with its own fee and duration, and permits are not always granted immediately, which can delay the start of your clearance. Terraced streets in areas such as Salford, Stockport and central Manchester often have no off-road space at all, so the permit is unavoidable.

Loading help is the real difference

A skip is only useful if you can physically get your waste into it. Wardrobes, sofa beds, fridge freezers and full lofts are a genuine two-person job, and skips have a legal fill line you cannot go above. When a skip is genuinely the better choice

We would rather tell you the truth than win a booking you regret. Hire a skip if you are running a long building project that produces waste every day, or if you are disposing of large volumes of rubble, soil, hardcore or concrete. Those materials are extremely dense, and skips are built for them. For almost everything else — house clearances, furniture, white goods, garden waste, office strip-outs and general household rubbish — a van is faster and cheaper.
